Rescue group seeks acorn donations to feed 18 baby squirrels

Posted: Updated:

A northern Michigan animal shelter is asking for donations of acorns and sunflower seeds after taking in 18 baby squirrels.

The Grand Rapids Press reports the squirrels brought to the A.R.K. Association to Rescue Kritters are no more than a month old and can't survive the winter in the wild. Young squirrels are taken to the wildlife rehabilitation center in Roscommon County by tree cutters or others who find them alone or orphaned.

The squirrels are placed at volunteer foster homes for bottle feedings and around-the-clock care. As they get older, they will transition to a large indoor space at the rehab center before moving into an enclosed outdoor area to help them get used to the cold.

Donations are being sought due to the cost of caring for the baby animals through winter.
