Animal Control director fired, becomes third in three years

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

The news of the firing of the county shelter director LeeAnn Ridley came as no shock.

"It's unfortunate for the animals," said Shawna Guiett.

Guiett and the staff at Amazing Grace Animal Rescue spend seven days a week taking care of more than a hundred animals.

"I'm not terribly surprised that this has occurred, because I knew things were not going well," Guiett said.

County Controller Robert Belleman said he fired Ridley yesterday during her probationary period because he was not satisfied with the job she was doing.

She's the third director to be shown the door in three years.

Guiett said it's time for a change in the culture at the county shelter.

"We need to hire someone who is a leader, first and foremost, who can come into the facility and look at everything that needs to happen there, and provide the leadership that's necessary," Guiett said.

For the time being, there will be no interim director. But, the county controller has asked the Sheriff's Office to step in and oversee operations.

Guiett hopes a permanent plan is in place soon.

Her rescue is running at capacity and an organized county shelter will help reduce the burden on them.

"Once the county gets their situation figured out, then with that facility operating the way it should, it would take a lot of pressure off of us," Guiett said.
