New owner breathing new life into bakery

Posted: Updated:

A new owner is breathing new life into Sutherland’s Bakery.

The bakery was a staple in Bay City before the family closed it last Christmas Eve.

“I got to talk to a lot of people who’ve come here for 103 years, 3 generations going into the 4th generation and they love this place,” said new owner Valerie Willis.

Willis is honoring the Sutherland Family who started it all by naming her new business O’RHanges’ Sutherland’s Bakery.

While loyal customers can expect some of their favorite baked goods, the new owner is also working to bring a modern flare to the historic bakery.

“One of the new things we’ve added is the coffee. Right now we have three different types of coffee available, but we’ll have up to 74 different kinds,” said Willis.

Willis, who also goes by O’RHange, her baking alter-ego, plans to eventually offer breakfast, lunch, candy and more.

But for now she’s got her work cut out for her, learning how to use some of the vintage equipment. Like the largest baking oven in Bay County.
