5 vehicle crash kills woman, alcohol possible factor

Posted: Updated:

A five vehicle crash has claimed the life of a Mid-Michigan woman.

It happened on October 3, on South Meridian Road, just south of the intersection of M-20 in Midland County’s Homer Township.

Sheriff’s Deputies say 53-year-old Vickie Shauger from Sanford was stopped at a red light on northbound Meridian Road when she was hit from behind by 24-year-old Brandon McMullen from Coleman. The impact pushed Shauger's vehicle into the back of a truck driven by 46-year-old Anthony Reed from Ashley. That truck was then pushed into another truck driven by 18-year-old Jessica Ozment from Merrill. Ozment's truck was then pushed into a vehicle driven by 59-year-old Delfina Skinner from Merrill.

Reed and McMullen were injured, but are expected to survive.

Vickie Shauger was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say that while there is evidence to indicate that alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, they are waiting for toxicology reports to make a final determination.
