Group calls on Michigan Legislature for hearing on gun control initiatives

LANSING, MI (WNEM) -

In the wake of tragedy after a mass shooting at a college in Oregon, a group called on the state legislature to support gun control initiatives.

"It could happen here, it could happen in your community, it could happen in my community. And we want to see something done before that, we want to protect our families," said Lansing Mayor Virg Benero.

The Michigan Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence sponsored a news conference on Monday morning.

"Write the chair of judiciary tell him, he represents all of Michigan and we want a hearing on House Bill 4261 for gun-free schools or House Bill 4590 for background checks," said Dr. Linda Brundage.

Andy Schor, a state representative who has pushed for stricter gun control measures for several years, would like to see tougher laws passed, but he's not counting on that happening.

"My bill has sat in committee for three years and every indication I've gotten from the Republicans who are in the majority are that they are not planning to take it up," Schor said.

Dr. Melvin Jones, a pastor at Union Missionary Baptist Church, said it’s time the measure is taken up.

"Until we speak with a loud voice until we put pressure on the legislature to change the laws things are not going to change and I’m just sick and tired of the kinds of massacres that are happening through young violence," Jones said. "These laws must change."
