MONTROSE, MI (WNEM) -

Michelle Dutcher is a parent of an eighth-grader at Kuehn-Haven Middle School in Montrose.

“I don't think she really knows how serious it is,” Dutcher said.

Over the weekend, a classmate was diagnosed with viral meningitis. Dutcher said she was hesitant to even bring her daughter to school on Monday.

Meningitis can be deadly, but this viral strain is less serious than bacterial.

Still, that doesn't mean it's not contagious, and very dangerous for the children.

“Wow, my thought was, I hope no other kids catch it. I'm glad we all know about it,” said parent Michael Osborn.

The superintendent sent a letter home with parents saying over the weekend the school was cleaned, and additional disinfecting will continue throughout the week.

But knowing the school had been cleaned was still not enough for some parents

“They should close the school down and clean it and make sure none of the other kids get sick because that's nothing to mess with,” Dutcher said.

Some parents had faith in the school district to prevent the spread of the virus.

“This school really takes care of the kids and looks out for everything. I'm proud of the school and everything and I love my kids go here,” Osborn said.

While it is impossible to guarantee the virus can be completely contained, the superintendent said they are doing everything they can to prevent it.

Dutcher just reminds her daughter the importance of good hygiene while at school

“That she keeps her hands sterile and clean every day,” Dutcher said.

The school district said it will be bringing in additional help to assist in regular disinfecting this week.

This is just the latest case of viral meningitis reported in a Mid-Michigan school. Two other school districts have reported cases, with one case of bacterial meningitis.
