Students start bottled water drive to help neighboring county

Posted: Updated:

A neighboring county is offering a helping hand to a community plagued by water issues.

"We're really excited," said Lindsey Mead.

The buzz is growing at Swan Valley High School and the stack of bottled water is as well.

After months of water problems in the city of Flint, including the city's schools, the students at Swan Valley decided enough was enough.

"We decided we would run a bottle drive and everyone bring in a case of water," said student Noelle Champagne.

At Swan Valley High School, the water in the drinking fountains is safe and clean.

But the students say that's often taken for granted, and that's why they've decided to start a bottled water drive for a neighboring district in need.

The students said you might not even think about the various daily needs for water at school activities.

Sports are also a time when that need is critical.

"We take for granted just being able to run up to the water fountain take a drink break and just have clean healthy water. Some schools just don't have that and it's necessary to be an athlete," said student Lauren Huebner.

Swan Valley principal Craig Blower said the way the kids have stepped up to help speaks volumes.

"We have great students. It's not just us, it's the whole Great Lakes Bay region. This is an amazing opportunity for us to reach out and help everybody," Blower said.

The delivery is set for Friday.
