New water filter just a phone call away

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

For Flint residents needing a water filter, finding one is now as easy as dialing 2-1-1.

The United Way of Genesee County is using Central Michigan 2-1-1 to help residents in Flint track down filters.

Several organizations have established distribution centers, and now Central Michigan 2-1-1 can give callers details on if they are eligible to get one, as well as where the distribution centers are.

“Our intent is to give Flint residents a 24-hour resource they can access if they have questions about the filter program,” said Jamie Gaskin, CEO of the United Way of Genesee County. “We also want to start the process of rebuilding trust in the community by providing a temporary solution to the water quality issues the community is facing.”

The United Way, Michigan Department of Human Services, Genesee County, Community Action Resource Department, City of Flint and the Genesee County Health Department have partnered with other private and public sector organizations and individuals to purchase enough water filters for each resident in the city.

Multiple other schools and businesses, including TV5, have teamed up to collect bottled water for those in need.

Before calling 2-1-1, residents are encouraged to check out the organization's website.
