The United Autoworkers Union has given official notice to Fiat Chrysler that union workers could strike after the two parties failed to reach an agreement.

In a statement to Glenn Shagena, Vice President of Employee Relations at FCA US LLC, the UAW said termination of the agreement with the automaker would be effective at 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, October 7.

Last week workers overwhelmingly rejected a tentative agreement. The union's four-year contract with FCA expired on Sept. 14 but workers have remained on the job under a contract extension.

According to the Detroit Free Press, as of Tuesday, the UAW’s negotiating team has been pulled from the bargaining table. The Free Press also quotes Chrysler in a statement that says “The company continues to work with the UAW in a constructive manner to reach a new agreement.”
