Fire department recognizes citizens for bravery

Laura McClean will always remember April 10, 2015.

"It was a scary moment," McClean said.

She was driving by a house on Andre Street in Saginaw. Right away she knew something wasn't right.

"Smoke coming out of the windows. I put my car in reverse and called 9-1-1 immediately and looked on the porch and she was lying face down," McClean said.

A woman in the home was cooking food. She fell asleep and a fire started.

She tried to escape but couldn't. Overcome by smoke she was desperate for help.

That's when McClean stepped in.

"It's exciting. I mean I was in shock you know you just react," McClean said.

But McClean wasn't the only one who jumped into action, Gregory Gonzales is a next door neighbor.

"I was just walking outside and I noticed smoke coming out and I seen the lady hanging out the door and I rushed to it," Gonzales said.

He and McClean helped pull the woman safely from the burning home.

For their heroism they were honored on Tuesday as recipients of the meritorious service award, presented at the Saginaw Fire Department's Award and Memorial Ceremony.

For his part, Gonzales said he was glad to help saving a life.

"She's OK, she's living," Gonzales said.

McClean’s award is proudly displayed in her office. She said she would do it all over again if given the chance.

"I was at the right place at the right time and I'm just proud. I'm thankful she's alive," McClean said.
