School enacts security changes after gun brought to school

Posted: Updated:

Mario Gonzales is a parent of a student at Thompson Middle School. On Monday, a student brought a gun to the middle school. School officials and police were alerted and found the student and the gun without incident.

In response to that incident, school officials have made changes to their security, which Gonzales calls a much needed boost.

"I was wondering why they didn't do it in the first place," Gonzales said.

School spokeswoman Cynthia Brackett told TV 5 over the phone, as of Tuesday, there are two metal detectors at both the front entrance and at the cafeteria entrance.

"We send our kids through the back door all the time. They stop them they take their phones away from them, they can't detect a gun? It kind of bothers me," Gonzales said.

So, TV5 asked Brackett the tough questions.

Brackett said until Monday, all students went through the metal detectors at the cafeteria only.

That's where everyone who arrives on time entered to start the school day. She tells us the student who brought the gun to school was late. He walked in through the front entrance with no metal detector in place yesterday and his gun wasn't detected.

Brackett said there are metal detectors at both entrances with staff on site at all times.

Nefeteria Demers has a little brother at the school.

"That's good. So nothing will happen like it did yesterday," Demers said.

She's relieved everyone came home safe after the boy with the gun was reported to a staff member by fellow students.

"Shocked. Just glad nobody got hurt," Demers said.

Gonzales said he wonders why each entrance didn't have metal detectors and said the change is better late than never.

"I'm just happy they're stepping up and actually doing something about it," Gonzales said.
