Lottery to own a piece of the Michigan State Capitol

Posted: Updated:

If you’ve ever wanted to own a piece of the Michigan State Capitol, this could be your chance.

The Michigan State Capitol Commission is hosting a public lottery to sell one hundred historic sandstone modillions removed from the Capitol during its 2015 exterior restoration.

Modillions are horizontal brackets located under a cornice or other building projection. They usually take the form of scrolls decorated with acanthus leaves.

The modillions are original to the Capitol, dating to the latter part of the Capitol’s construction (1872-1878), when hundreds were hand-carved of sandstone from Ohio.

During this year’s restoration of the Capitol’s dome and exterior stonework, it became clear that many modillions had become badly eroded. Most likely from the effects of more than 135 years of exposure to Michigan weather.

The Michigan State Capitol Commission wants those wishing to purchase a modillion to keep in mind that all those being offered for sale show the effects of weathering and deterioration to varying degrees.

Modillion Facts:

Average weight: 25 to 40 pounds

Average length: 15 inches

Average width: 7-9 inches

Average thickness: 6-7.5 inches

One hundred modillions will be made available for $100 each through a public lottery.

If you’re interested, contacting Valerie Marvin at: or call 517-373-2358 and leave a message.

Include your name, preferred phone number, mailing address, and e-mail address.  Only one entry per person.

Entries will be accepted from Tuesday, October 6, 2015, until midnight on Friday, October 16, 2015.

One hundred winning names will be selected in a public drawing on Monday, October 19, at 12:00 pm in Room H65 in the Capitol. You do not have to be present to win.  If your name is drawn, you’ll have won the right to purchase a modillion for $100. You will be notified by email or telephone if you are a winner.

Winners may pick up and pay for their modillions from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on Thursday, October 22 or Friday, October 23, or from 9:00 to 11:00 am on Saturday, October 24. Winners will select their modillions on a first-come, first-served basis.

Proceeds from the lottery will go toward future Capitol restoration projects.
