Meningitis cases 'happens every year'

An increase in meningitis cases. It's just as common as the fall colors said Jennifer Eisner.

"This is something that happens every year," Eisner said.

She's with the state Department of Health and Human Services.

Genesee County has been hit with cases in Swartz Creek, Montrose, Beecher, and Grand Blanc recently.

Eisner said that Genesee County has had 42 cases in the past year, three in the last week alone.

"Meningitis is a complication of another infection. So it's that first infection that we want to stop," Eisner said. "And you can do that by taking steps such as washing your hands, keeping surfaces clean, covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze."

Despite the number of cases of meningitis we've been reporting on the last few weeks, Eisner stops short of calling this an outbreak.

"The numbers that we're seeing in Genesee County are not unexpected for this time of year. And we see an increase across the state every year as well during this season," Eisner said.

Eisner insists she isn't worried about the possibility of an outbreak in Mid-Michigan.

As of now, her data just doesn't support it. But she wants us all to take the necessary steps to reduce or eliminate meningitis cases all together.

"We're always concerned about the health of our residents. But this isn't something that is unusual or that we would expect to spread beyond normal numbers at this point and time," Eisner said.
