Vietnam veterans receive thanks for service

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds of Vietnam veterans from across Michigan were honored at the steps of the state capitol. It was an emotional event for many of them, including Lloyd Clark.

"Getting a little tearful right now," Clark said.

The Saginaw native served in the 9th infantry division during 1968-69. He was wounded by a hand grenade in combat. As bad as that injury was he said the welcome home after the war was even worse, making today's thank you a special one.

"It's just a warm feeling that we all get you that people have recognized the Vietnam people," Clark said.

State Senate Majority Leader Mike Kowall was instrumental in putting this event together. He said thanking our Vietnam veterans is very important.

"Gives these Vietnam veterans the recognition that they truly earned and deserve," Kowall said.

Kowall sponsored the "Michigan Says Thanks" event. He had an emotional moment himself while talking to four veterans reunited for the first time in years.

"They're all standing there hugging and crying. They hadn't seen each other since they left Vietnam," Kowall said.

Kowall wants people to remember we have the freedoms we have today thanks to brave men and women like Clark who was willing to put his life on the line to protect our future.

"We were really grateful to serve our country and do the best we possibly could," Clark said.
