ASKING TOUGH QUESTIONS

Woman wants dead tree cut down sitting between two properties

SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Dorothy Croucher is upset about a dead tree in her backyard.

So she found a contractor, a company called Reds Property Preservation. They submitted a bid of $1,400 for the job.

"I just didn't think it was right," Croucher said.

But Croucher claims Saginaw Township worked out a deal with another company for nearly $2,000. Croucher wanted TV5 to ask the tough questions: why was the higher bid selected?

After all, she is responsible for part of the cost.

"We're on a very fixed income. We have somebody taking care of us around the clock. So it's very hard," Croucher said.

TV5 went to the township offices to ask the tough questions, wanting to know what is being done to remove the tree.

Spokeswoman Bridget Smith said the township was simply trying to facilitate the removal of the tree, which is smack in the middle of Croucher's property and the strip mall next door.

"We probably inserted ourselves as a way to be nice," Smith said.

She said the township never took out bids to get the tree removed. Smith said they are working with both parties to settle the dispute.

"We're hopeful that perhaps the property owner can assume all of the cost if not most of it," Smith said.

The other property owner is West Valley. They said they were the ones who got the higher bid.

West Valley offered Croucher a compromise, brokered by township officials.

"The cost that you would pay would be half of what your quote was, which would be $700," Smith said.
