GRAND BLANC, MI (WNEM) -

Basketball star and Flint native Mateen Cleaves spreading a message about goal setting and hard work to Flint area high school students.

"Your will to win has to be greater than your fear of losing. You have to set your goals high," Cleaves said.

Cleaves kicked off today's leadership mentoring seminar.

It's the fifth year for the event hosted by the Genesys Athletic Club and Greater Flint Sports Hall of Fame.

"Here you've got wonderful coaches and great inductees who've become great all stars and hall of famers who are giving the benefit of their wisdom to the young people at the age where kids can really pick up on this," said Bob Burek, Greater Flint Sports Hall of Fame.

More than 200 students from 24 different schools took part in the teen leadership conference.

For these teens the leadership conference is also a chance build connections with other high school athletes. And take what they learn back to their teams.
