Bob Bashara to take stand in pursuit of new trial

DETROIT (AP) -

A suburban Detroit man convicted of arranging his wife's death is expected to take the stand as part of his efforts to get a new trial.

Bob Bashara's hearing in Wayne County Circuit resumes Thursday morning before Judge Vonda Evans.

Evans said Wednesday that Bashara's testimony might take several hours.

Bashara wants his murder conviction and life sentence thrown out, saying his rights were violated by an ineffective defense.

Jane Bashara of Grosse Pointe Park was found dead in 2012 inside her Mercedes-Benz, which was ditched in a Detroit alley.

Prosecutors have said 57-year-old Bob Bashara coerced handyman Joe Gentz into strangling her at their home. Gentz is in prison after being convicted of second-degree murder.
