Dallas Cowboy and Flint native Brandon Carr is tackling the fight for better education.

“A lot of excitement I'm just honored to be on the forefront of this fight,” Carr said.

Carr visited students at Dye Elementary School in Flint Township on Friday.

He was in town to take a look at one of three reading centers he donated to local schools in partnership with the United Way.

“I was surrounded by a ton of educators growing up so education has always been a no. 1 priority,” Carr said.

Principal Detra Fields said several other community groups have since contributed books and other materials to the reading oasis.

She said she's happy to see students so excited about meeting a football star who got his start right here in Flint.

"It means the world to the community, to the school to the students. It gives them a role model to look up to not just for football but also shows he cares about reading and giving back," Fields said.

Walking through the halls of his former elementary school, Carr got emotional as he talked about giving back to his home community.

“Coming back to my old stomping grounds where I really fell in love with going to school – trying to hold back some,” Carr said.

Reading to students, Carr said he hopes they catch on to his love of books and learning.

“It's to show them that there is a support system a community that cares for them, but the ball is in their court,” Carr said. “It's up to them to take advantage of these colorful bean bags and reading oasis that a lot of people in our community have set up for them.”
