New school district reports case of viral meningitis

STANDISH, MI (WNEM) -

Another case of viral meningitis has been confirmed in a Mid-Michigan student, this time in the Standish School District.

Central Michigan District Health Department officials sent out a letter to parents Friday confirming that an elementary student contracted the illness, although the letter does not say when the student had last been in class.

This is at least the seventh school in the Mid-Michigan area that has reported a case of meningitis so far this school year.

All but one have been viral meningitis, which health experts say is fairly common. One student in the Swartz Creek school district was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis, which can be deadly.

Paying special attention to hand washing and personal hygiene can prevent the spread of the virus.
