War hero brings inspiring message to local students

Local students got a special visit today. Travis Mills, the Mid-Michigan war hero and army veteran was back in the area to spread his motivational message.

Mills lost portions of all four limbs to a roadside bomb while serving in Afghanistan in 2012.

Monday the Vassar native spoke to students at Marlette Elementary School.

“But truthfully, I never thought I’d be making such an impact on people’s lives. But, since I am, I’m thankful for it. I want people to know they can always keep pushing forward and to never give up, to never quit. Life will get better, you make your own situations,” said Mills.

Mills told the students that one of his first goals after the bombing was to walk in a 5K in New York City, and he did it.

“I know that kids can have it tough, it can be rough for somebody. But they just know that if they put their head down and keep going forward and they set their goals and they find a way to motivate themselves; it’s up to them to really get after it and it really does make a difference,” said Mills.

Mills currently lives in a smart home in Maine. It is customized to make him as independent as possible.
