Man donates 35 gallons of blood

BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

Tom Baird is proud of his collection of Tigers and his wall of fame.

"Large collection of baseballs, baseball books, large photos," Baird said. "I have a large collection of presidential memorabilia."

A houseful full of history and really neat things.

But the item that means the most to him?

A Ruby award, presented to him by Michigan Blood for going above and beyond to help save lives through blood donation.

"That award means the world to me. I wasn't in it to get any recognition at all," Baird said.

For 42 and a half years, Baird has donated a pint of blood every 56 days at Michigan Blood in Bay City.

"You know, I never know where my blood's going, who it might help that day," Baird said.

A simple hour of his time that has helped save more than 800 lives.

It’s dedication that has landed him on billboards

"You get a good feeling, just like all blood donors do when they donate," Baird said.

Put together 35 gallons of milk, and that's how much blood Baird has donated.

He said he ranks in the top tier of blood donators in the state.

And on Monday night, he received special recognition at the Bay City Commission meeting, for his dedication to helping the well-being of people in the city.

He said he hopes his passion for donating and saving lives is inspiration to others.

"I just encourage everybody that's been out there donating to continue to donate because it makes a difference," Baird said.
