A judge says mental evaluations are ongoing for a man charged with intentionally striking and killing a Michigan firefighter with his pickup truck.

The Lansing State Journal reports Judge Hugh Clarke gave the update Wednesday during a status conference in Grant Taylor's case. Clarke says competency and criminal responsibility evaluations could be finished by Nov. 1.

A competency hearing will be held after lawyers get the reports.

The 22-year-old Taylor is charged with murder and other crimes in the Sept. 9 hit-and-run death of Lansing firefighter Dennis Rodeman. Rodeman was struck while in a street collecting donations for charity. Police say Taylor was upset about the impact on traffic.

According to court records, Taylor's mother had sought court orders to involuntarily put him in hospitals because of mental illness.
