A Mid-Michigan school closed Thursday and Friday to deal with the possibility of scabies.

Officials with Bay Arenac High School, in Essexville, tell TV5 they closed their doors after parents informed them on Wednesday that their children may have the disease.

Scabies is a contagious skin disease marked by itching and small raised red spots. It’s caused by the itch mite.

Superintendent Erin Sullivan tells TV5 the students who may have the disease were not in attendance on Wednesday. The school is being deep cleaned, and will re-open on Monday.

Sullivan said parents were notified by phone Wednesday afternoon. A letter was sent out, and parents should receive that Thursday or Friday.
