MID-MICHIGAN (WNEM) -

Two school districts in Mid-Michigan reported cases of viral meningitis in their schools.

Bendle High School, in Burton, sent a letter home to parents today, informing them a student at their high school was diagnosed with probable case of viral meningitis. The student had last been in class on Oct. 16.

Clio Schools also had a case of viral meningitis diagnosed, but in one of their elementary school children. As a precaution, the school system sent a letter home to parents and cancelled all of their after school activities.

Including these cases, 11 different schools have reported cases of meningitis.

All but one have been viral meningitis, which health experts say is fairly common. One student in the Swartz Creek school district was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis, which can be deadly.

Of the 11 cases, only two were not in Genesee County.

Paying special attention to hand washing and personal hygiene can prevent the spread of the virus.
