Getting Results: Power company to fix street light

Posted: Updated:
FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

TV5 first brought you the concerns of a resident last night about her streetlight problems and now it looks like a fix may be coming her way.

"There are so many streetlights out," said Rachel Silk.

Silk called TV5 to ask why was it taking so long to get her streetlights fixed in her section of Flint?

Consumers Energy is responding and promising to get them back in operation.

Area manager Kevin Keane has a message for Silk.

"The viewer who said the light had been out for a year was correct in part. That light was out three different times last year, has been repaired twice, and will be repaired again in the next week," Keane said.

Keane said a new system is in place to make sure complaints are taken care of.

"Consumers has an online order system. And the city is now tracking individual streetlight outages. We're working together to improve the process and make sure those lights get repaired," Keane said.

But there's another group working to make sure those lights stay on too, the Building Neighborhood Capacity.

"Crime doesn't take place in the light, it takes place in the dark," said Monica Frazier.

Frazier was one of a handful of people training tonight as part of a neighborhood watch program in preparation for Halloween – and Angel’s Night.

Devil’s Night, the night before Halloween, is when criminals will often light fires around the city. Angel’s Night is an effort to combat that destruction, through neighborhood volunteers like Frazier.

Frazier has been working to actively report streetlight outages and get them turned back on.

She said Consumers and the city have been cooperative in their efforts to improve safety.

"Now we're moving forward, so that's one check mark off of our list," Frazier said.

The city does get a rebate for the operating costs if the lights are not fixed within three days. But there's no way for the utility to know the lights are out unless they get in those citizen reports.
