Half dozen farmers help with harvest after man requires brain surgery

SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

There's a bond that ties farmers of separate families together.

“When one has trouble, the rest come to his rescue,” said Joe Gosen.

At the end of the day, they all work the fields and put in long hours of physical labor.

So when one farmer wasn't able to harvest his corn this year, many other farmers around him stepped up to do it for him

“Donating time for my cousin Gary, to help get the crops off the field,” Gosen said.

As farmers know all too well, crops won’t wait, even if you have broken machinery or are dealing with a health issue.

And that’s what brought more than a half-dozen farmers in the Burt area together on Friday.

Saginaw County Biline Farms owner Gary Gosen had brain surgery to have a tumor removed on Oct. 16.

Gary isn't physically able to do the work himself, so Gosen and six other farmers knew what they had to do.

And there wasn't much time left.

“Cause the corn is ready right now to go and bad weather will be setting in soon so it's time to get it in the elevator,” Gosen said.

But it's not just a simple task. The group helped out with about 300 acres of fields.

“We should be done with it today and that will make him feel better,” Gosen said.

Gosen said Gary is well-liked in the small community of Burt in Saginaw County.

He had no problem finding other people to pitch in.

“Right around here is a good farming community,” Gosen said.

Gary is still recovering from his brain surgery, but Gosen said he's extremely thankful.

“He's feeling great about it. Took a load of his mind,” Gosen said. “And that might make his recovery faster, knowing his crops are in. He appreciates it a whole lot.”
