Discipline report released for MSP trooper involved in fatal crash

Posted: Updated:

We now know how a Michigan State Police Trooper was disciplined for a fatal crash that happened during a chase.

Jacqueline Nichols, 64, died, and two others were seriously hurt in the July 2014 accident in Genesee County.

Trooper Timothy Fagin was on patrol in Flint when he attempted to stop a driver for a seat belt violation. The suspect took off, with Fagin in pursuit. The statement of charges/proposed discipline shows that Fagin continued the chase through an intersection he thought had a blinking yellow light. It was actually a blinking red with two posted stop signs. Fagin’s cruiser collided with a vehicle not involved in the chase, killing Nichols and severely injuring Precious Cochrane, who was then 61, and Robbie Head, who was 39.

The settlement agreement that was reached includes a 20 day suspension for Trooper Timothy Fagin.

Fagin was also transferred to the Lapeer MSP Post, and cannot transfer back to the Flint Post until 2017.

Two Flint residents were charged with felonies related to the chase.
