Plasma center proposed for plaza

SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A business with a negative reputation is highlighting already present concerns.

A CSL Blood Plasma Center could move into Saginaw Township. Bridget Smith, the township planner, believes the idea of a blood plasma center and the people who use them carries a negative stigma with it.

"Some business owners from Green Acres attended one of the first meetings and again they expressed some of the same concerns the planning commissioners had," Smith said. "Especially in terms of loitering and in terms of parking demand."

But she said that's not the issue here. She said the planning commission has to do what's best for all the businesses to co-exist in Green Acres Plaza.

"I can tell you from a planning standpoint if a 12,000-square foot restaurant would be going in we would still be concerned with parking," Smith said.

Smith said if CSL Plasma provides a lobby, public bathrooms, operates from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and meets all the requirements of the zoning ordinance, they'll be allowed to move in. Providing an opportunity for some folks in Saginaw Township to get a little extra cash by donating their plasma.

"To say that people who need an extra $300 a month don't live in Saginaw Township would be erroneous," Smith said.
