Gas stations taking steps to prevent skimming

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

Beating skimmers with stickers. That's what Admiral gas stations in the area are doing to protect their customers.

"Obviously there's so many sources of identity theft nowadays. You know I guess it's better to be safe than sorry," said Kristi Wheeler.

TV5 brought you a story about thieves planting devices inside gas pumps designed to steal your information when you swipe your credit card. It's called skimming.

It has drivers like Wheeler concerned.

"How many people use their cards nowadays? You know you're numbers are everywhere," Wheeler said.

The manager of an Admiral said his pumps haven't been hit by skimmers, but they aren't taking chances.

Here's how it works. A sticker is placed right where a skimmer would open the pump. If the sticker is tampered with the words "void open" appears along the label, alerting gas station employees and customers of a breach and warning them not to use that pump.

At this point we don't know of any other gas stations in Mid-Michigan using the sticker.

Wheeler hopes that will change she said she applauds the newest trend aimed at protecting our hard earned money.

"If it's a good way to protect ourselves and our children I say go for it," Wheeler said.
