Riders frustrated by busing systems cutbacks

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

A city’s busing system has approved significant changes to its routes to make up for its deficit.

"They dead wrong for that stuff," said commuter, Tracy Smith.

Smith had just gotten off the bus route that will soon see its hours slashed.

"I'm very upset because that don't make no sense on how the buses doing like this, everybody depend on the bus, everybody don't have transportation or know how to drive, this is their transportation right here, it is the bus," Smith said.

To make up for a more than $1 million budget shortfall, the STARS board of directors voted Monday to consolidate some routes, scale back on the later night times, and slash jobs.

STARS general manager says the cuts are needed.

"It will be some adjustments for them, and I truly feel for them," said Sylvester Payne.

But riders on STARS route 5 had a clear message to share.

"It makes it difficult that they're changing up the routes because some people rely on this," said commuter, Nicole Sylvester.

Smith said she's vowing to keep fighting to keep Saginaw's bus system intact.

"They should get everybody who don't ride the bus to support the ones who need the bus," Smith said.
