BANGOR TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

Winter weather is around the corner and the roads will get slippery. But a local fire department said preparing for the worst is essential to saving lives.

“Being prepared for anything that happens, that's why we do this,” said firefighter Shalah Hutchins.

The Bangor Township Fire Department is ahead of the game, according to Fire Chief Rob Glenn.

“They are learning proper techniques and ways of getting into cars. It’s called extraction training,” Glenn said.

The fire department uses all the tools and simulates all the scenarios they would be up against in a real life situation.

On Tuesday, they practiced extracting a man out of a vehicle, running through these simulations prepare first responders for the dangers that lie ahead.

Bangor has some of the most dangerous intersections in the county, which the fire chief attributes to people not paying attention.
