Lawmakers considering providing option of earlier school start

GENESEE COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Many parents had a mixed reaction about a new bill out of the state capitol.

The bill would give school districts the option of starting the new school year before Labor Day.

A republican lawmaker proposed the bill to shorten summer vacation because many students are already in school during the summer break because of sports.

Kids in other countries and states go to school year round.

Tourism officials said family vacation is exactly why lawmakers need to rethink this one.

Steve Yencich is the CEO of the Michigan Lodging and Tourism Association and said Labor Day weekend is big business for the state's economy. And if that's disrupted, there could be a huge financial fallout.
