Development project humming along

BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

It won't be long before residents and visitors will be able to enjoy new shopping and dining experiences at a huge local development project.

Work is humming right along at the Uptown at Rivers Edge project south of downtown Bay City. Construction crews move materials inside the Courtyard by Marriott hotel.

"Next year it'll be open for guests it'll have a hundred rooms and add a great amount of vibrancy to the area," said Shaheen Development marketing coordinator, Stu Kelly.

There's also a flurry of activity at Uptown Place which the Kelly said visitors will love once it's completed this spring.

"This is a commercial, riverfront building. The first floor will have retail shops as part of our Galleria at Uptown Place," Kelly said. "We'll have a restaurant on both end caps and unique boutique retails shops in the middle of the first floor with a covered arcade that juts between connecting the riverfront with the parking lot."

Candace Bales of the Bay City Downtown Economic Development Authority said the Uptown Project provides a bright light for the future of the region.

"It does put the spotlight on our city as a whole and the area and I think people are starting to say there's an up and coming place," Bales said.

The sidewalk now links uptown at rivers edge all the way to downtown Bay City on the other side of Veterans Memorial bridge.

So now residents can go the whole distance, all the way to some condominiums on the south side of Uptown and walk all the way to the traditional downtown.
