Michigan cider mill tested positive for E. coli

ST. JOHNS, Mich. (WNEM) -

There are things people look forward to each fall.

"We love this place," said Nicole Haney.

For Haney, stopping by Uncle John's cider mill for a fresh cup of cider is one of them.

"Yes, every year, it's our tradition," Haney said.

But on Tuesday, she learned Uncle John's isn't selling cider after a batch of it tested positive for e-coli.

Mike Beck is one of the owners of the cider mill.

He said the Department of Agriculture tested a random batch in mid-October and the results that came in Monday found E. coli in it.

"In the 25 years of all sampling here, we've never had any issue before," Beck said.

So he decided to voluntarily pull cider from the shelves.

"It was kind of a shocking thing to us as well," Beck said.

The bad cider was sold at the mill between Oct. 18 and 21.

If you have a jug of it, you'd know because it is labeled with a sell-by date of Oct. 30.

Beck said there have been no reports of illness. But, they are doing everything they can to make sure it doesn't happen again.

That means more testing.

"We're going to go from random testing of samples to all batches of cider will be tested," Beck said.

He said tests will be back tomorrow on his current batch of cider and if it's good to go, it will go on the shelves.

"When it is for sale, you can be assured it will be a safe cider," Beck said.

Haney said she she'll be back ready to fill her cup and continue her fall tradition.

"I feel like they're being open about it and taking precautions, so we feel good about it," Haney said.

If you purchased a jug of the cider during the time, do not drink it. Uncle John’s will give you a refund or exchange it.

Beck said this contamination scare is going to be taken seriously so it doesn't happen again.
