A 35-year-old Lansing firefighter who died after being struck by a pickup truck while collecting donations for charity could be honored with a roadway named for him.

The Lansing State Journal reports state Rep. Tom Cochran has proposed renaming Interstate 496 within the Lansing city limits the Lansing Firefighter Dennis E. Rodeman Memorial Freeway.

Cochran, a former Lansing fire chief who hired Rodeman into the department, says if Rodeman's child grows up and sees "his or her dad's name on that sign, this is one way to honor him, his family and his widow."

Rodeman's wife was pregnant with their first child. City officials say Rodeman was on duty, so the family should get duty death benefits.

Authorities say Rodeman was intentionally hit Sept. 9. A driver is charged.
