SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

A clash between two rivals was today’s lesson for some Mid-Michigan students.

The Flint Firebirds paid a visit to Saginaw to play the Spirit in the annual Education Day game.

More than 3,000 kids packed the Dow Event Center to watch.

Saginaw Spirit team officials said this is one of their favorite times of the year.

“I think it’s the energy in the building this brings. You have a lot of students that come out here from all over the region here in Mid-Michigan,” said Rick Riffel, the Director of Sales and Marketing.

Riffel tells TV5 the players enjoy this event too, and with 3,000 screaming students cheering them on, it’s easy to see why.

“They feed off that energy. You see what the score is right now. So it’s well worth having them here, all the students here this morning,” said Riffel.

But this is more than just a game, educators like Jennifer Thrush say this is a great opportunity for students to learn and grow outside of the classroom.

“Being able to get outside the community and to experience something with their friends and away from everything else is a fun experience for them,” said Thrush.
