SANILAC COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A 71-year-old man struck a horse and another car in a vehicle accident on Wednesday.

Gerald Knapp, 71, of Croswell, was driving east on Peck Road in Sanilac County’s Elk Township when he failed to see a horse standing in the roadway, police said.

Knapp struck the horse and then lost control of his 2010 Dodge Avenger. Knapp continued eastbound on Peck and struck a car that was in the road in the westbound lane, police said.

The other vehicle was driven by Jamie Wells of Peck.

Knapp was removed from his vehicle by the Elk Township Fire Department and was transported to McKenzie Hospital for treatment by Croswell EMS, police said.

Wells was uninjured in the accident, but the horse died.

Police located the owners of the horse. They told police they bought four horses that day and three of them got out of the pen.

The accident happened shortly before 8 p.m. on the 1200 block of E. Peck Road.
