Mid-Michigan shelter using National Cat Day to get cats adopted

FRANKENMUTH, MI (WNEM) -

The Humane Society said every year 3 million cats and dogs never find a home and are euthanized in shelters. And to make matters worse approximately 80 percent of those animals are healthy and could have been adopted.

Nancy Engel runs a cat rescue center in Frankenmuth.

"These cats need our help," Engel said.

She said cats are more likely to be abandoned by their owners than dogs.

"There are so many strays, unfortunately people don't place a high value on the cats they deserve," Engel said.

Engel said there's more than 90 million cats in the U.S. She says that's more than double the amount of dogs.

"They are the most popular pet in America," Engel said.

And what better day to promote her cause – National Cat Day. A day Engel hopes that many of her strays find a home.

Engel's mission: to help every cat at the Pet Angel Adoption and Rescue find a new home.

"Adopting a cat is fairly simple," Engel said.

There are nearly 50 cats at Angel Adoption and Rescue available for adoption.
