GENESEE COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

The family of a Mid-Michigan man who has been imprisoned in Iran for more than four years is asking for some financial help.

Amir Hekmati, a former Marine, was visiting family in Iran in 2011 when he was taken captive and accused of being a spy. A claim his family denies.

Friday his family took to Twitter to ask for help to continue the fight to free him.

The post said the GoFundMe funds will be used to help with the day-to-day expenses of fighting for Amir, as well as travel to meet with decision makers that can impact real change in his case.

The money will also go towards respite care for Amir’s father, which will allow his mother to continue in her efforts to free him.

The news comes the same day another Iranian-American businessman was arrested and imprisoned in Tehran, becoming the fourth U.S. citizen known to be held there.
