New farmers market opening, expected to attract tourism

FRANKENMUTH, MI (WNEM) -

A crow and its nemesis – a scarecrow – showing up together to celebrate a brand new farmers market.

The new indoor farmers market will be located on the north side of the city on Main Street.  The Frankenmuth Farmers Market association worked making sure this idea turned into a reality.

"It's actually a big tourism piece too, called agritourism," said Michelle Bernreuter. "People seek markets out and Frankenmuth likes to be on the cutting edge so we have farmers. It's our agricultural heritage and we wanted to blend the two of those together."

The Frankenmuth Community Foundation committed $150,000 towards the $1 million raised for the project.

"Two of the goals of the Frankenmuth Community Foundation are economic growth and community good, and this project really fits both of those," said Stephen List, Frankenmuth Community Foundation.

More and more Mid-Michigan communities are pitching in together to start up these brand new farmers markets. They said, it's a win-win situation.

"It brings people in for fresh produce and it also creates an economic spinoff that happens when that money circulates in that community," said Saginaw Futures President Joann Crary. "So very positive in the fact that it's a year-round farmers market, the first one we've had in Saginaw County."

The new farmers market is scheduled to be completed by next spring.
