SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

A man with a criminal record has been charged after allegedly stealing a woman’s purse from the Saginaw Township Meijer store on Nov. 1.

A 74-year-old woman reported that a man took her purse from her shopping cart at 12:30 p.m. while she was putting groceries in her car.

Shortly after the theft was reported Carrollton Township police spotted a vehicle that matched the description of the purse snatcher’s.

Police attempted a traffic stop, but the driver fled the scene into the city of Saginaw, police said.

The driver lost police by running stop signs and red lights.

Police located the vehicle a short time later. The vehicle was abandoned and was reported stolen the day before from the Grand Rapids area, police said.

The Michigan State Police K-9 unit was called to the scene to assist in the search for the suspect.

The unit led police to a garage door where the suspect was found hiding in the garage, police said.

The owner of the purse’s property was found on the suspect, police said.

The suspect, 47-year-old Eugene Kaczmarczyk from Charlevoix, was also a parole absconder out of Grand Rapids.

Investigators say Kaczmarczyk was able to use the victim's credit card at a gas station before he was taken into custody.
