Northern Lights may be visible this evening

Posted: Updated:

In addition to our beautiful weather around Mid-Michigan this week, we have a great chance to see the Northern Lights. According to the Space Weather Prediction Center, we could reach a geomagnetic storm level of 3, which is considered strong.

The best time to see them will be this evening and overnight. We'll have partly to mostly clear skies this evening, so the viewing should be good if they occur.

On the attached photo, courtesy of the Space Weather Prediction Center, you can see Mid-Michigan is in the green shading which means there is a chance to see these Northern Lights just about everywhere, especially in areas further to the north. All of Michigan is also above the red "view line", which signals the furthest south in the United States where they can be seen.

To see them, be sure to get away from the city lights and get to a dark place. Considering how far south the view line goes, we may be able to see them higher overhead than usual. Happy hunting!
