Residents react to early morning fatal crash into school

Marti Wasmuth can't believe the damage she saw at Midland Academy. The gaping hole in the wall a result of fatal car crash that happened just before 3 a.m.

"Oh it's unbelievable. You know how the people that did it did it," Wasmuth said.

Police said the jeep left Bailey Bridge Road, smashing into a classroom. Wasmuth has a granddaughter that spends a lot of time in that room. She shutters to think what would've happened if the accident would've occurred during the school day.

"If class were in session you who's to say how many kids would've got hurt, killed, from it? You know it's just mind boggling," Wasmuth said.

Two passengers in the car, a 33-year-old man from Bay City and a 37-year-old man from Saginaw died at the scene. The driver, a 35-year-old man from Saginaw was transported to MidMichigan Medical Center in Midland. He is expected to survive.

Sgt. Mike Sokol is with the Midland Police Department. Due to the driver’s injuries, police haven’t been able to speak with the driver. And Sokol said police don’t yet know where the men had been or where they were going.

But they do know one thing: "The evidence of alcohol at the scene was there," Sokol said.

Wasmuth said this type of accident hits close to home for her. She lost a daughter to a drunk driver.

She wants to see stiffer penalties for those who drive under the influence. At the same time she feels bad for the driver who had two people die on his watch.

"What's going through their mind you know? They're going to have to live with this for the rest of their life, what they've done. And it's very hard," Wasmuth said.
