Three largest cities led by women

Kathi Newsham is returning to a familiar role.  She roamed city hall for two previous terms as mayor.

"I was extremely pleased, I'm very thankful to the voters in Bay City and my family and friends," Newsham said.

So what's her top priority for this upcoming round as her honor?  Fighting blight.

"To get the houses that are able to be rehabbed back on the tax rolls and if they can't be you know, then to maybe have them taken down and a neighbor or somebody buy the property then maybe that way we can get them back on the tax rolls," Newsham said.

Newsham would like local law enforcement to keep up the pressure fighting drug addiction in the city.

She's also pushing for more businesses to open up in Bay City, creating more jobs and not just minimum wage positions.

"We need jobs where you can get a family of four into our affordable housing here in Bay City," Newsham said.

On the bright side she's excited about the economic possibilities that could be created by the Uptown at Rivers Edge project.

Come January, Mid-Michigan's three largest cities will have female mayors: Bay City, Flint and Midland.  Newsham is looking forward to working with those other women.

"I think that we'll see some different things happening with three females to get working together," Newsham said. "And at some point I know we're all going to get together so it will be great to work with the other two women."
