Empty shot gun blasts considered for getting rid of geese

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

"Leave the geese alone!"

Naomi Martin likes bringing her grandkids to the pond behind the downtown Saginaw water treatment plant to see the flocks of Canada geese.

"I think they're pretty cool. The kids like playing with them, chasing them around. They're not doing anything, just chilling," Martin said.

But a potential plan by the treatment plant could soon make that a thing of the past.

They're proposing asking Saginaw police to fire blank shotgun rounds near the geese - hoping to scare the birds away.

"It sounds cruel. I don't know why they would want to do something like that," Martin said.

Water and wastewater director Kim Mason said the birds are a nuisance, leaving their droppings wherever they go.

Not everyone is against the proposal though, like Johnel Oates, who was fishing just yards from the geese.

"I think that would be decent. I think that would be a nice thing to keep the water clean."

But for Martin, this proposal is just not an option.

"Do something else with the money, instead of using it on shooting a gun off in the air or at birds," Martin said.

The water treatment plan has still not make their final decision.
