CORUNNA, MI (WNEM) -

An elementary student in Shiawassee County is being treated for viral meningitis.

The student attends Elsa Meyer Elementary in Corunna.

Corunna Public Schools disinfected all surfaces at the elementary school and any affected school buses on Nov. 4.

They issued a letter on Nov. 5 informing parents of the student’s illness.

Medical experts said viral meningitis is common this time of year and much less dangerous than bacterial meningitis.

Corunna is one of several school districts, mostly in Genesee County, to see cases of meningitis this year.

There have been several meningitis outbreaks in Mid-Michigan this year.
