Flint Veteran's Expo rescheduled for Saturday after power outages

GENESEE COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

The Dort Federal Event Center’s lights are back on, but when the Flint Veteran’s Expo was slated to start, it was still dark.

Vietnam War veteran Dale Congdon's plans ended up changed.

“I was scheduled to go to 'nam. A week before we shipped out they changed everybody's designation,” Congdon said.

He was planning to attend the Flint Veteran Expo, but when he arrived, he discovered it was postponed.

“I would have liked to walk around. See some of the old guys,” Congdon said.

But heavy storms the night before knocked out power to the event center.

“With the storm that came through here last night I'm not surprised really,” Congdon said.

Rows of empty display tables wait for hundreds of registered guests. But they will have to wait a little longer, according to Jeff Barnes, director of Michigan Veterans Affairs agency.

“You have to make a decision. You have so many people traveling from other areas of the region and we wanted to honor that,” Barnes said. “We didn't know the extent of the damage in the region, and with the power out we felt like this was the thing to do.”

The heavy wind and rain not only affected the event center, but thousands residents in Genesee county.

“We woke up at six o’clock this morning and it was really battered outside the house,” Congdon said.

But, as Murphy's Law would have it, shortly after the event would have started, a generator kicked in and the lights came on.

As a result, a couple services were offered today to veterans who didn't know the event had been canceled.

On Saturday, the expo will be back open.

“As veterans, we've certainly been through worse than this. Power went out when we were all driving to the location so, just adapt and overcome,” Barnes said.

The Expo has been rescheduled from 9 a.m. until noon.
