Holiday staple will not be open on Thanksgiving

FRANKENMUTH, MI (WNEM) -

The aisles at Bronner's are getting busier and busier as the holiday inches closer.

"Things are hopping, it's a lot of action," said owner, Wayne Bronner.

Like most stores, the next two months will be the busiest at Frankenmuth's Christmas wonderland.

And as stores fight for business, many are electing to dish out Black Friday deals on Thanksgiving day, most recently Toys-R-Us.

Stores opening on Thanksgiving remains a controversial issue.

But not for Bronner.

"I think it's a negative trend, to be real frank," Bronner said.

He says opening on that Thursday has never crossed his mind, mostly, because he said his employees deserve family time.

"We think it's time to spend with the family and remember the occasion," Bronner said.

Diane Karst has worked at the store for years and says it's tough to imagine having to leave on Thanksgiving.

"Families are so important nowadays," Karst said.

The sign out front says Bronner’s is open 361 days a year. Bronner said that’s the way it’s been for decades, he doesn’t expect it to change.

"They are very, very happy with that. So we have personal time set aside that they should enjoy and share with their families," Bronner said.
