Dow foundation, others support new Michigan State center

MIDLAND, MI (AP) -

The Dow Chemical Company Foundation and others are working with Michigan State University to launch a Midland center for science, technology, engineering and math education.

The East Lansing school said in a news release Monday the Michigan State University STEM Center for the Great Lakes Bay Region is expected to open in May. The center will target K-12 students and include some university courses and teacher enrichment programs.

Dow's foundation, as well as others, worked with MSU to provide $10 million for the center.

Michigan State President Lou Anna Simon says the center helps "broaden our research, educational and economic impact."

The center will be located at the former Michigan Molecular Institute. Dow says it the institute will wind down its research activities with the university to create the center.
