MERRILL, MI (WNEM) -

After seeing national attention on police wrongdoing, one school district decided to take matters into their own hands.

On Tuesday, Merrill Community Schools hosted a Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.

Students were able to meet officers and even have lunch with them.

Merrill High School Principal Todd Barraco said it helps to get kids acquainted with officers early in life.

“I think the kids here especially have a tremendous amount of respect with these officers, and it’s been a really good deal this entire school year,” Barraco said.

A recognition ceremony was also held on the football field in honor of the officers.
